STRATEGY

If the bottom ones digit is too big, split the top number to get more ones.

  1. 1Split the top number so it has enough ones
  2. 2Subtract tens from tens and ones from ones
  3. 3Add the two answers together

→ 70 − 30 = 40, 12 − 7 = 5, 40 + 5 = 45
